When was the last time anyone saw the inside of Houston’s hulking, shuttered Astrodome? What’s it like in there, more than a decade since it hosted its final major-leaguesports event, and more than 5 years since its last bar mitzvah?
The last time someone actually used the Astrodome was in 2005 as shelter from Hurricane Katrina. Check out some more great photos of the abandon Astrodome at Swaplot, a Houston Real Estate blog.
A sad sight for Houstonians.
Located in southwest Houston, Reliant Park includes Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, as well as the Astrodome, Reliant Center, and Reliant Arena. The Texans practice facility is also on site.

The actual dome sits 18 stories above the playing field and consists of Lucite skylights that were planned to allow the natural grass playing field to stay alive. However, these translucent panels presented a problem. During afternoon games, outfielders were blinded by the sunlight. Some panels were coated with paint to reduce the problem but that only created another. The natural grass playing field died because not enough sunlight was reaching it. Astroturf, a green surface of nylon grass that later became famous at stadiums throughout the country, was developed and named after the team.

Often referred to as “The Eighth Wonder of the World”, the Astrodome was the first domed sports stadium in the world. Originally, the stadium’s playing surface was a Bermuda grass specifically bred for indoor use, but in 1971 AstroTruf was installed. The Astrodome was home to the Houston Oilers & Astros for over 30 years. Today, the Astrodome remains virtually idle as it sits in the shadow of the Houston Texans home, Reliant Stadium.
